PROCLAMATION sA <br />DESIGNATING THE WEEK OF May 8-14,2016, AS <br />TOBACCO FREE FLORIDA WEEK <br />WHEREAS, even though Florida has made substantial strides in the progress of a smoke- <br />free policy, Floridians are still involuntarily affected by secondhand smoke's toxic chemicals, <br />significantly increasing the risk of lung cancer, Florida's number -one cancer killer; and <br />WHEREAS, in the United States, two in five children ages 3 to 11 are exposed to <br />secondhand smoke and 39.7 percent of Florida high school students and 35.9 percent of Florida <br />middle school students reported being exposed to secondhand smoke in a room or car in the <br />past week; and <br />J_ <br />WHEREAS, comprehensive smoke-free policies not only protect people from secondhand <br />smoke but they also de -normalize tobacco use, encouraging more smokers to quit and fewer <br />youth to ever start; and <br />WHEREAS, the best way smokers can protect their loved ones from secondhand smoke is to <br />quit smoking, and since 2007, more than 126,000 Floridians have successfully quit tobacco <br />using one of Tobacco Free Florida's 3 Free and Easy Ways to Quit. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS, INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that the week of May 8 through 14, <br />2016, be designated as Tobacco Free Florida Week in Indian River County. <br />Adopted this 10th day of May, 2016.
