PROCLAMATION <br />RECOGNIZING MAY 15 THROUGH 21, 2016 AS <br />NATIONAL POLICE WEEK <br />WHEREAS, there are more than 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities <br />across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Indian River County Sheriff's Office <br />and Indian River County municipal police departments; and <br />WHEREAS, in 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May <br />15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as National Police <br />Week; and <br />WHEREAS, on average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in <br />the United States every 61 hours. Since the first known line -of -duty death in 1791, more than 20,000 <br />U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice; and <br />WHEREAS, a total of 1,439 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in the past 10 years, <br />or 144 per year 123 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in 2015; and <br />WHEREAS, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund honors and remembers <br />those recently fallen law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate price and given their lives to <br />protect and serve; and <br />WHEREAS, the service and sacrifice of all officers killed in the line of duty were honored during <br />a Wreath Placement Ceremony on the morning of May 16 at the Indian River County Courthouse. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that May 15-21, 2016 is recognized as National Police Week in <br />honor of the service of law enforcement officers in our community and communities across the nation, <br />and May 15 is recognized as Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor of all fallen officers and their <br />families and U S. flags should be flown at half staff. <br />Adopted this 17th day of May, 2016 <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />Bob Solari, Chairmjan <br />EPFlescher, Vide—Chairman <br />Wks �y S.
