RESOLUTION NO. 99 -1 7 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY REQUESTING THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT <br />OF TRANSPORTATION TO INITIATE APPROPRIATE ACTIONS <br />LEADING TO THE WIDENING OF INTERSTATE 95 TO SIX LANES IN ST. <br />LUCIE, INDIAN RIVER, BREVARD, AND VOLUSIA COUNTIES. <br />WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Transportation is responsible for programming <br />improvements to the Interstate Highway System within the State of Florida; and <br />WHEREAS, Interstate 95 currently has six or more lanes south of Ft. Pierce; and <br />WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Transportation's current interstate improvement <br />plans include the widening of Interstate 95 10 six or more lanes north of Interstate 4 in Volusia <br />County; and <br />WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Transportation's current interstate improvement <br />plans do NOT include a commitment to widen Interstate 95 to six or more lanes between Ft. Pierce <br />and Interstate 4 in Volusia County; and <br />WHEREAS, the condition of Interstate 95 between Ft. Pierce and Interstate 4 in Volusia <br />County is critical to the long term economic competitiveness, hurricane evacuation capacity, safety <br />of motorists, and growth management capabilities of eastern Florida; and <br />WHEREAS, the condition of Interstate 95 between Ft. Pierce and Interstate 4 is important <br />to the entire State of Florida because Interstate 95 is a primary access route between the major urban <br />areas in southeast Florida and the eastern United States; and <br />WHEREAS, implementing a major widening project can take many years to complete and <br />early action is necessary to avoid future congestion and safety problems; and <br />WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the State of Florida for the Florida Department of <br />Transportation to maintain a balanced program regarding the phasing and geographic distribution <br />of improvements to the State's entire interstate highway network. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE INDIAN RIVER COUNTY BOARD OF <br />COUNTY COMMISSIONERS: <br />That the Indian River County Board of County Commissioners requests the Florida <br />Department of Transportation to initiate appropriate actions leading to the widening of <br />Interstate 95 from four to six lanes between Ft. Pierce and interstate 4 in Volusia County. <br />MAMMON' 2 <br />
