Dylan Reingold, County Attomey
William K. DeBraal, Deputy County Attorney
Kate Pingoh Cotner, Assistant County Attorney
12A
County Attorney's Matters - B. C.C. 1.24.17
Office of
INDIAN RIVER COUNTY
MEMORANDUM
TO: Board of County Commissioners
FROM: Kate Pingolt Cotner, Assistant County Attorne L
DATE: January 18, 2017
ATTORNEY
SUBJECT: Amending the 2017 State Legislative Program to Include Legislation Relating to the
Florida Building Commission to the County's List of Concerns
BACKGROUND:
In December of 2016, Senator Tom Lee announced that he would be leading the Senate's effort to revamp
and streamline the Florida Building Code. Specifically, Senator Lee is interested in removing a
requirement for the Florida Building Code to be updated every three years to reflect the most current
version of various international codes. However, Indian River County staff is concerned that this change
could negatively impact our community's ability to receive federal emergency funding in the event there
is a natural disaster (e.g. a hurricane).
FUNDING:
There is no funding associated with this item.
RECOMMENDATION:
The County Attorney's Office recommends that the Board of County Commissioners amend the 2017
State Legislative Program to oppose any legislation which would change the Florida Building Code to
negatively impact a local government's ability to receive federal emergency funding in the event there is a
natural disaster.
Attached. Proposed Committee Bill 7000
P135
