J <br />ON MOTION by Commissioner Scurlock, SECONDED by <br />Commissioner Bird, the Board unanimously (3-0, <br />Chairman Eggert being absent) approved the <br />amendments to Lease No. 3400 and Lease No. 3503, as <br />recommended by staff. <br />Commissioner Bird felt we should go ahead and try to get an <br />extension on the leases, but he was still appalled at the U.S. Fish <br />& Wildlife Service's adamancy that the park cannot be developed in <br />harmony with the southeastern beach mouse and man. He felt, <br />however, that we need to extend these leases in order to buy <br />ourselves some time to decide how we are going to proceed further <br />in perhaps challenging their opinion on the development of these <br />parks. <br />Vice Chairman Bowman reminded Commissioner Bird of the saying <br />that if you are going to tinker with the environment, you better be <br />sure to save the small pieces.
