Transportation <br />Rail transportation in the County is handled by Florida East <br />Coast Railway, while numerous freight truck lines are available <br />to serve. the County. Highways providing surface travel are <br />Interstate 95, U.S. 1 and State Road A1A for north -south travel <br />and State Road 60 for travel to the west, while the Florida <br />Turnpike crosses south and northwest through the southwest corner <br />of the County. The area is served by Greyhound Bus Lines for <br />passenger and package service. <br />Vero Beach Municipal Airport provides scheduled commuter <br />airline service and is capable of handling most commercial <br />aircraft, while one other airport in the County serves charter <br />and private aircraft. Scheduled airline service is available to <br />County residents through the Melbourne Regional Airport (about a <br />fifty minute drive), Orlando International Airport and Palm Beach <br />International Airport (each about an hour and a half drive). <br />Health Care <br />The Indian River Hospital District, encompassing all but six <br />square miles of the County, has a 347 -bed facility in Vero Beach. <br />The Humana Hospital Sebastian, a private for-profit acute care <br />facility, is located in the northern part of the County on U.S. <br />1. There are presently over 200 physicians serving the hospitals <br />and area residents. The Sunshine Rehabilitation Center offers <br />physical and speech therapy to handicapped children and adults. <br />Education <br />The education system is administered on a County -wide basis <br />by the School Board of Indian River County. The five -member <br />Board, elected for staggered four-year terms each, appoints a <br />Superintendent of Schools. The County has twelve elementary <br />schools, one middle -junior high, two middle schools, one junior <br />high and one senior high. There is one Special Education School <br />for all grades. Enrollment for the 1989-90 school year was 11,516 <br />students. There are 945 administrative and teaching personnel <br />and 419 non -instructional personnel. In addition to the public school <br />system, there are several parochial and private schools. <br />Indian River Community College, with its main campus located <br />in Ft. Pierce, about 15 miles from Vero Beach, has branch <br />campuses in Vero Beach and in Okeechobee and Martin Counties. <br />The state -supported community college offers a general college <br />program for the first two years and a wide variety of technical <br />and vocational instruction. The Mueller Center in Vero Beach has <br />a 40 -acre campus, ten classrooms and office facilities. <br />Communications and Electric Utilities <br />A-8 <br />
