61) <br />PROCLAMATION <br />DESIGNATING MAY 29, 2017, AS MEMORIAL DAY <br />WHEREAS, Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for <br />those who have died in our Nation's service; and, <br />WHEREAS, Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868 when flowers were placed on <br />the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery; and, <br />WHEREAS, more than 15,000 veterans of all wars presently reside in Indian River County, <br />which is host to 24 veteran organizations; and, <br />WHEREAS, on Memorial Day we pause collectively for a moment of reverence, reflecting on <br />the heroics of those who answered when called by their Country to bear arms and to protect and <br />preserve the ideals of democracy; and, <br />WHEREAS, Memorial Day is a cherished tradition in our Nation and its observance helps us <br />appreciate our history, our values, and our responsibilities by reminding us that freedom is not <br />free; and, <br />WHEREAS, the Veterans Council of Indian River County, consisting of 24 veteran <br />organizations representing more than 15,000 veterans residing in the County, is holding the <br />Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary Monday, May 29, 2017. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS, INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that May 29, 2017 be designated as <br />"MEMORIAL DAY" and the Board encourages all citizens to fly the American flag to remember all <br />service members who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, and to attend the Memorial Day ceremony <br />at 8:45AM at Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary Monday, May 29, 2017. <br />Adopted this 16th day of May, 2017.
