Focusing on social and emotional
development through mentoring, Youth Guidance is both following cutting edge research, and following its heart as
we closely align with our mission, history and core purpose... to build a path out of poverty for children from low-
income, single parent homes. The transformation began with the development of the Mentoring Academy model.
This model has been a success on all fronts. Children are excited by the variety of activities (up to 15 mentoring
groups each week)volunteer mentors like the ability to commit to one semester at a time(all groups are operated
on a 7 week semester schedule)and parents like the options we have for all age levels as it allows them to enroll
multiple children in the program. Our one-to-one mentoring program has also undergone significant changes. Rather
than a mentor being matched with a child and hoping a relationship develops, we are matching mentors and children
who already know each other. It is now required that all one-to-one mentoring relationships are created in the
Mentoring Academy. That means that the mentor and child have already worked together in a mentoring group,
have found commonalities and mutual interests, and want to spend more time together. One-to-one mentoring
relationships formed in this way have proven to be some of the strongest we have created.
2017044 Page 3 of 24 05/03/2017
