Proclamation Designating December 1992 as Drunk and_Dructcted <br />Driver Awareness Month in Indian River County <br />ON MOTION by Commissioner Bird, SECONDED by <br />Commissioner Tippin, the Board unanimously adopted <br />the following Proclamation: <br />PROCLAMATION <br />DESIGNATING DFCF•M,�NIiR, 1992 <br />AS DRUNK AND DRUt;GED DRJCY:R AWAPENY- MONTH <br />IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLOP3DA <br />WHEREAS, Florida recorded 1064 alcohol-related traffic <br />fatalities and 24,472 alcohol-related traffic injuries in 1991; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, it is estimated that nearly one-fifth of all <br />Florida boating fatalities result from people operating boats <br />while under the influence of alcohol and drugs (OUI)i and <br />WHEREAS, the law enforcement officers from the Indian River <br />County Sheriff's Office, Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Marine . <br />Patrol, Florida Game arid Fresh Plater Fish Commission, Florida <br />Office of Motor Carrier Compliance, and local police departments <br />throughout the county have exhibited leadership in protecting the <br />public from the DUI and OUI problem] and <br />WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Transportation, State <br />Safety Office, and the Florida Department of Health arid <br />Rehabilitative Services, Injury Control Program, are providing <br />assistance in the development of comm.rnity- based traffic safety <br />programs with DUI emphasis; and <br />WHEREAS, citizen advocacy groups are continuing their <br />efforts to reduce the incidence of driving under the influence <br />and operating under the influence in Florida; arid <br />WHEREAS, the use of alcohol and controlled substances while <br />operating motor vehicles and boats can best be combatted by local <br />communities and an informed citizenry that understands the perils <br />of operating motor vehicles and boats while impaired and the <br />penalties that are imposed by Florida's DUI and OUI•Statutes: <br />NOW, THEREFORE, HE 1T PROCLAIMED BY TDE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the month of <br />December, 1992 shall be designated as <br />DRUNK AND DRUGGED DRIVING AWARENESS MONTH <br />in Indian River County, arid all citizens are urged to become more <br />cognizant of the dangers associated with intoxicated drivers and <br />boat operators and to support the fight against driving while <br />under the influence of alcohol arid other drugs on our highways <br />and waterways. <br />Dated this 24 day of November, 1992 <br />2 <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />Carolyn Fggert,/)t'�airman <br />ri <br />
