- M
'39 percent of Segment II is in use and 61 percent remains.
Director Pinto felt that we probably should be looking now at what
we need for Segment III because of the time it takes to get
permits, etc. We have room for four segments at the present site,
but in order to use the entire 270 acres of the Landfill for
garbage, we have to go off site for borrow pits and stormwater
management. In addition, the compost site is going to take up a
good deal of land. Appraisals have been done on parcels of land
around the Landfill.
Turning to the subject of recycling, Director Pinto
anticipated that if we continue using the present packaging of food
and goods, residents in the future will be paying higher bills for
solid waste disposal than for electricity. There has been an
increase in commercial and curb -side recycling pickup. The City of
Vero Beach just recently has implemented a recycling pickup for
multi -family residences, and the County is looking at implementing
a similar program in the next year or two. Commercial haulers are
getting 250 tons a month in the curb side pickup. Director Pinto
emphasized that illegal dumping will continue until a mandatory
garbage collection is established.
In conclusion, the Board expressed their appreciation of the
excellent presentation and accepted Director Pinto's invitation to
tour the Landfill site sometime early next year either separately
or as a group.
There being no further business, the Board adjourned at 12:00
Noon.
ATTEST:
K.
