FF"_FA 561 <br />the good job he is doing, especially with the resource officer <br />program in the schools and the Gifford Crime Prevention program. <br />Mr. Hart emphasized the need for crime prevention measures in this <br />county, especially with regard to the teenagers. He urged the <br />Board to find the necessary dollars to keep the 5 resource officers <br />in the schools and expand the existing crime prevention programs. <br />Henry Fischer of Roseland greatly respected the Commission <br />members but wished to make some recommendations for fixing the <br />broken vessel that we have in this county, such as ... <br />... appointing a blue ribbon committee to look for a top <br />level person to replace the present county administrator. <br />... restructure the County's bidding procedures. <br />... restructure the enterprise funds. <br />... stop buying things that aren't necessary. <br />Martha Argue, local real estate agent, felt that a chill is <br />going through most everyone about the seriousness of the slowdown <br />in the economy. She emphasized that businesses need to be <br />encouraged, not taxed further. In addition, she suggested that new <br />businesses receive a letter of welcome. Mrs. Argue stated she was <br />not impressed with the 2% decrease of the proposed 6% increase in <br />taxes and would like to see the County work toward a zero budget <br />increase for next year. <br />Bill Tripp, resident of Indian River County and representative <br />of the fire fighters, believed the fire fighters received a good <br />education at last week's meeting regarding the BCC's position on <br />the tight budget. However, he was concerned about having the <br />number of new paramedics cut down to just three because of the <br />impact it might have on the safety and protection of the public. <br />He hoped that in the future they could work with the County to <br />properly upgrade the manning of the fire station on Oslo Road and <br />the fire station on SR -60 west of town. <br />Mark Tripson, 50 12th Street, commended the BCC for doing such <br />a good job of cutting another $1 -million out of budget this last <br />week. He wondered if the Board could find another $1 -million if <br />they had another week to work on it. <br />Commissioner Macht had no problem with the total taken out of <br />the non-profit agencies, but was a little troubled by the <br />distribution. He suggested that instead of taking $500 out of Safe <br />Space, where children are involved, we take that amount out of a <br />14 <br />
