NOV 2 31993 BOOK 91, ME 40 <br />. -7 <br />P R O C L A M A T I O N <br />DESIGNATING DECEMBER 1, 1993 AS <br />WORLD AIDS DAY <br />IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />WHEREAS, the World Health Organization has designated <br />December 1 of each year as World AIDS Day, a day to expand and <br />strengthen the worldwide effort to stop AIDS; and <br />WHEREAS, the global spread of HIV infection and AIDS <br />necessitates a worldwide effort to increased communication, <br />education and preventive action to stop the transmission of HIV <br />and the spread of AIDS; and <br />WHEREAS, World AIDS Day provided the community with Treasure <br />Coast Community AIDS Network (TCCAN), serving Indian River <br />County, the opportunity to focus on HIV infection and AIDS, <br />caring for people of the County of Indian River with HIV and <br />AIDS, and learning about AIDS; and <br />WHEREAS, the World Health Organization now estimates that 14 <br />million people are currently infected with HIV and that over 2.5 <br />million have gone on to develop AIDS; and <br />WHEREAS, the American Association for World Health is <br />encouraging a better understanding of the challenge of HIV and <br />the spread of AIDS nationally as it recognizes that the number of <br />people diagnosed with HIV and AIDS in the United States continues <br />to increase with an estimated 1 to 1.5 million Americans <br />currently HIV positive and over 315,000 AIDS cases reported as of <br />June, 1993; and <br />WHEREAS, World AIDS Day 1993, "Time to Act" will focus on <br />taking action and expressing the urgent need for the Citizens of <br />Indian River County to realize that it is time to face the <br />challenge of HIV and Aids: <br />NOW,'. THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, that December 1, 1993 be <br />designated as <br />WORLD AIDS DAY <br />in Indian River County, and the Board urges all citizens to take <br />part in activities and observances designed to increase the <br />awareness and understanding of AIDS as a global challenge, to <br />take part in AIDS prevention activities and programs, and to join <br />the global effort to prevent transmission of HIV and the further <br />spread of AIDS. <br />Adopted this 23 day of November, 1993.. <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSION <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />Richard N.
