0 <br />ON MOTION by Commissioner Macht, SECONDED by <br />Commissioner Eggert, the Board unanimously adopted <br />Resolution 94-66, supporting federal acquisition of <br />the "Kennedy Tract" bordering the Pelican Island <br />National Wildlife Refuge. <br />Resolution No. 94 -66 <br />A RESOLUTION OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />SUPPORTING FEDERAL ACQUISITION OF THE "KENNEDY TRACT" <br />BORDERING THE PELICAN ISLAND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE. <br />WHEREAS, the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, <br />established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903 as the first <br />national wildlife refuge of the United States, is located in <br />unincorporated Indian River County; and <br />WHEREAS, the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge was <br />established as a preserve and breeding ground for native birds, and <br />continues to serve as a nesting area for such birds as the brown <br />pelican, common. egret, snowy egret, reddish egret, great blue <br />heron, little blue heron, tri -color heron, black -crowned night <br />heron, white ibis, glossy ibis, double -crested cormorant, anhinga, <br />and oyster catcher; and <br />WHEREAS, Florida's population growth and conversion of land <br />for development continue to encroach on our natural systems; and <br />WHEREAS, federal acquisition of the herein described "Kennedy <br />Tract", approximately 90 acres of land bordering the Pelican Island <br />National Wildlife Refuge, would provide an importantbuffer to <br />protect the Refuge from land development encroachment; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA: <br />Section 1. That the Indian River County Board of County <br />Commissioners hereby supports federal acquisition of the "Kennedy <br />Tract" to serve as a buffer to the Pelican Island National Wildlife <br />Refuge. Said Kennedy Tract is legally described as: <br />Tax Parcel No. 04-31-39-00000-0060-00001.0 <br />Government Lot 6, less the south 660 feet of the east <br />673.86 ,feet, and also including Government Lot 1 of <br />Section 9, Township 31 South, Range 39 East <br />Section 2. This Resolution shall become effective <br />immediately upon adoption. <br />THE RESOLUTION was moved for adoption by Commissioner <br />Macht , the motion was seconded by <br />Commissioner Eaaert , and upon being put to a vote, the <br />vote was as follows: <br />Commissioner <br />John W. <br />Tippin <br />Ave <br />Commissioner <br />Kenneth <br />R.
