BOOK 93 PAGE 16 <br />ON MOTION by Commissioner Eggert, SECONDED by <br />Commissioner Adams, the Board unanimously (4-0, <br />Commissioner Bird being absent) accepted the Annual <br />Fire Control Report from the Division of Forestry. <br />ANNUAL FIRE CONTROL REPORT <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY <br />JULY 289-1994 <br />As required by the Division of Forestry Fire Manual, an annual report is <br />submitted each fall to cover the work undertaken by the Division during the past <br />fiscal year. <br />Currently Indian River Co. is assessed $3,079.71 for fire protection of <br />105,657 acres. The following is a break down of the Division activities for July 1, <br />1993 to June 30, 1994. <br />A. Burning Authorizations - During the past twelve months the Division issued <br />1,256 authorizations, for 23,934 acres. The authorizations were for <br />agriculture, silviculture, and limited landclearing type fires. The number of <br />authorizations are for the entire county including the cities of Fellsmere, <br />Sebastian,. Orchid Island, and Vero Beach. The Division of Forestry does <br />not charge for burning authorizations or smoke complaints. <br />B. Fires - The number of fires increased this past year from 30 to 56 fires. <br />There was a increase in the total acreage, from 293 to 8951.2 acres. Two fire <br />in the St. Johns marsh accounted for 8150 acres. The fires were 4500 and <br />3650 acres respectively. <br />The Fire Department handled numerous fires where our assistance was not <br />needed. These are not reflected in this report. Lightning caused fires are our <br />leading cause of fires. <br />C. Law Enforcement - In Indian River County we issued 12 Notice of <br />Violations to people for illegal burning, carelessly starting a fire, or allowing <br />their fire to escape. Suppression bills were sent to the known violators, when <br />the Division of Forestry occurred any cost. Suppression billinggs used <br />instead of criminal proceedings for most first time offenders. <br />D. Fire Prevention - Fire prevention this past year was directed at adult to help <br />reduce our fires to ZERO HUMAN CAUSED FIRE& This was <br />accomplished by radio talk shows and by passing out material during Fire <br />Prevention week Several'news articles relating to fire prevention and current <br />fire situations were given to local newspapers. This next fiscal year will bring <br />a renewed commitment to the local schools. With the purchase of the <br />Smokey Bear 50th. birthday materials, we are committed to cover as many <br />schools aspossible this year. The Division assisted local landowners and <br />governmental agencies (state and county) with 14 prescribed burns for <br />approximately 6,500 acres. <br />E. R.C.F.P. Lease - Indian River County currently has leased from the Division <br />one 5,000 gallon tanker. This unit is stationed at Station 70 in Sebastian. <br />4 <br />September 6, 1994 <br />
