5.A <br />PROCLAMATION <br />DESIGNATING THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 18 - 24, 2018, <br />AS THROUGH WITH CHEW WEEK <br />WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Health's Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida and QuitDoc <br />Foundation are leaders in tobacco prevention and cessation efforts; and, <br />WHEREAS, using smokeless tobacco can lead to nicotine addiction; and, <br />WHEREAS; smokeless tobacco products like chew and dip can contain 28 cancer-causing <br />chemicals; and <br />WHEREAS, smokeless tobacco causes cancer of the mouth, esophagus, and pancreas; and, <br />WHEREAS, the rate of smokeless tobacco use has not decreased as drastically as cigarette use <br />from 2012 to 2016; and, <br />WHEREAS, once adolescents start using one tobacco product, they are more likely to experiment <br />with others; and, <br />WHEREAS, many of the highest smokeless tobacco use rates are in rural areas; and <br />WHEREAS, Tobacco Free Florida's Quit Your Way tools and services can help a tobacco user <br />successfully quit smokeless tobacco products. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that the week of February 18 — 24, 2018 be recognized as <br />Through with Chew Week in Indian River County. <br />Adopted this 13th day of February, 2018.
