<br />DESIGNATING APRIL 14, 2018 AS INDIAN RIVER STEAM FEST DAY
<br />WHEREAS, the citizens of Indian River County see the benefit of educating children in the areas of Science,
<br />Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM); and
<br />WHEREAS, STEAM fields are important to the economy and general well-being of our community because
<br />they are the underpinning of manufacturing, food production, health care, and much more; and
<br />WHEREAS, artists, designers, and writers provide new insights and perspectives that can sow the seeds of
<br />scientific progress; and
<br />WHEREAS, 2.4 million STEAM jobs are projected to go unfilled in 2018; and
<br />WHEREAS, there is a severe underrepresentation of women and minorities in STEAM fields; and
<br />WHEREAS, between 2017 and 2027, the number of STEAM jobs will grow 13 percent, compared to 9 percent
<br />for non -STEAM jobs; and
<br />WHEREAS, the average median hourly wage for STEAM jobs is $38.85 compared to the median earning for
<br />all other types of jobs of at $19.30; and
<br />WHEREAS, out of 100 STEAM occupations, 93 percent of them had wages above the national average; and
<br />WHEREAS, we need creative people to form productive collaborations with scientists, educators, and
<br />technologists to make a positive impact on the world; and
<br />WHEREAS, 8.74 percent of middle school girls express an interest in engineering, science, and math, but
<br />only 0.3 percent choose computer science as a major when they get to college; and
<br />WHEREAS, students learn five critical skills through an arts education: creativity, collaboration, confidence,
<br />cultural awareness and empathy, and critical thinking; and
<br />WHEREAS, Indian River County is committed to investing in the education of all young people by providing
<br />expanded learning opportunities in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math; and
<br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, INDIAN
<br />RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that April 14, 2018 be designated as Indian River STEAM Fest Day in Indian
<br />River County.
