RESOLUTION NO. 95-50 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, TO THE FLORIDA <br />LEGISLATURE IN SUPPORT OF LEGISLATION ALLOWING <br />PRISONER REIMBURSEMENT TO THE COUNTY. <br />WHEREAS, the inmate population in county jails in increasing dramat- <br />ically each year representing a major portion of the county's budget <br />expenditures; and <br />WHEREAS, the proposed bill would allow counties to recoup some of the <br />cost of maintaining prisoners in county jails; and <br />WHEREAS, under this act local governments would be allowed to collect <br />per diem fees from sentenced inmates who can be shown able to bear the coat <br />of incarceration; and <br />WHEREAS, the bill is not designed to assess offenders with only moderate <br />resources and provides for local governments to conduct financial investi- <br />gations of each sentenced inmate to determine their obligation; and <br />WHEREAS, the bill allows for the assessment of all other costs incurred <br />by the county for each inmate against the inmate; and <br />WHEREAS, reimbursement secured under this legislation would be returned <br />to the general fund of the county to be available for general fund purposes; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMI88IONERS OF <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the Board urges the Florida Legislature <br />and the Governor of the State of Florida to enact this proposed legislation <br />which would allow prisoner reimbursement to the county. <br />The resolution was moved for adoption by Commissioner Eggert , and <br />the motion was seconded by Commissioner Adams , and, upon being put to <br />a vote, the vote was as follows: <br />Chairman Kenneth R.
