APPENDIX B <br />GENERAL INFORMATION CONCERNING <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY <br />The following information is included only for the purposes of providing general background <br />information. The information has been compiled on behalf of the County, and such compilation involved <br />oral and written communication with the various sources indicated. The information is subject to change, <br />although efforts have been made to update information where practicable. <br />Indian River County was established in 1925 by an act of the Florida Legislature separating it <br />from St. Lucie County, and it encompasses approximately 497 square miles. It is located on the central <br />east coast of Florida, approximately 135 miles north of Miami, 190 miles south of Jacksonville and 135 <br />miles east of St. Petersburg. The County is bounded on the north by Brevard County, on the south by <br />St. Lucie County, on the west by Osceola and Okeechobee Counties and on the east by the Atlantic <br />Ocean. The City of Vero Beach is the seat of County government and the largest city in the County. <br />The other incorporated cities in the County are Fellsmere, Indian River Shores, Orchid and Sebastian. <br />There are approximately 100 miles of waterfront land in the County, including about 23 miles of Atlantic <br />beaches. <br />Temperatures range from an average of approximately 58°F in January to approximately 81 °F <br />in August, with an average year-round temperature of 73.4°F. Yearly rainfall is from 50 to 55 inches, <br />with September usually the rainiest month. <br />Population <br />The 1980 Census population of the County was 59,896, while the 1990 Census population was <br />96,208, and the current 1994 estimated population is 97,415. Vero Beach, the largest city in the County, <br />and the County seat, had a 1980 Census population of 16,176 and an estimated 1990 Census population <br />of 18,226. <br />The most current rankings show that in 1994, Indian River County ranked 31 st out of 67 counties <br />in Florida in terms of total population. As illustrated from the following table, the population of the <br />County has grown significantly since 1960.
