Transportation <br />Rail transportation in the County is handled by Florida East Coast Railway, while numerous <br />freight truck lines are available to serve the County. Highways providing surface travel are Interstate <br />95 and State Road AIA for north/south and State Road 60 for travel to the west, while the Florida <br />Turnpike runs south and northwest through the southwest corner of the County. The area is served by <br />Greyhound Bus Lines for passenger and package service. <br />Vero Beach Municipal Airport provides chartered airline service and is capable of handling most <br />commercial aircraft, while one other airport in the County serves both charter and private aircraft. <br />Scheduled airline service is available to County residents at the Melbourne Regional Airport (about a 50 <br />minute drive), Orlando International Airport and Palm Beach International Airport (each about an hour <br />and a half drive). <br />Hospitals <br />The Indian River Hospital District, encompassing all but 6 square miles of the County, operates <br />a 347 -bed facility in Vero Beach. The Sebastian Hospital, a private for-profit acute care facility, is <br />located in the northern part of the County on U.S. 1. There are presently over 260 physicians serving <br />the hospital and area residents. The Healthcare South facility offers physical and speech therapy to <br />handicapped children and adults. <br />Communications and Utilities <br />One daily newspaper is published in the County. There are 5 local radio stations. Television <br />reception is good for the major commercial stations, and cable is available to County residents. <br />Telephone service is supplied by Southern Bell. Vero Beach Electric System and Florida Power and <br />Light Company supply electricity. <br />Government <br />The County has a 5 -member Board of County Commissioners (the "Board"), one from each of <br />5 districts elected at large (County -wide) for staggered terms of 4 years. The Chairman and Vice <br />Chairman are elected by the Board. A County Administrator is appointed by the Board and is responsible <br />for administrative and fiscal control of the resources of the County. <br />The Board apportions and levies County taxes and controls the expenditure of all County funds, <br />except school funds, which are controlled by The School Board of Indian River County, and certain <br />special taxing districts which are managed by independent entities. The fiscal year of the County runs <br />from October I to the following September 30.
