What is Rabies? <br />• A deadly viral disease that can be prevented NOT cured <br />• Attacks nerves and brain tissue of warm-blooded animals including people <br />• Virus is shed through saliva and passed to another animal or person, usually through a <br />bite <br />• Can also occur if saliva or nervous tissue enters open wounds, the mouth, or eyes <br />• Animals with rabies have strange behavior—can be aggressive and attack for no reason <br />• Some can act very tame (especially wild animals) <br />• May not be able to eat, drink, or swallow <br />• May drool because they can't swallow <br />• May stagger or become paralyzed <br />• Eventually the animal will die? <br />• Only treatment is rabies specific immune globulin and rabies immunization <br />• Treatment must be started soon after exposure <br />What do I do if an animal bites me? <br />• Immediately thoroughly wash wound with soap and running water for 5 to <br />10 minutes <br />• Try to get a complete description of the animal and where it is so it can be <br />picked up by Animal Control for confinement or rabies testing <br />• Go to your family doctor or the emergency room <br />• Call Animal Control immediately with the description and location of the <br />animal <br />• If you kill the animal, be careful not to damage the head and avoid further <br />contact even when it is dead <br />Indian River County Animal Control -772-226-3486 <br />City of Vero Beach Police Department -772-978-4600 <br />6/7/2018 <br />Z-0 <br />
