Major <br />increases included $5.7 million in public safety expenses due to an increase in salaries and <br />benefits ($1.5 million) and an increase in the allocated share of pension expense. In addition, <br />there was $0.9 million in governmental activities related expenses due to hurricanes Matthew and <br />Irma. <br />• Governmental activities expenses were charged $8.4 million for their related share of overall <br />pension expense as calculated by the Florida Retirement System. The increase in expense was <br />allocated to the following functions: general government $0.8 million, public safety $6.5 million, <br />physical environment $0.03 million, transportation $0.4 million, economic environment $0.008 <br />million, human services $0.03 million, culture and recreation $0.3 million, and court related $0.3 <br />million. <br />12 <br />
