location of furring, nailers, blocking, grounds, and similar supports to allow attachment of <br />other construction. All joints between wood shall be installed for a smooth transition. <br />G. Attachment: <br />1. The Contractor shall consult the fastener manufacturer's published literature and <br />follow the recommended requirements for pre -drilling, cleaning, placement and <br />compatibility of substrates. Follow manufacturer's requirements for fasteners <br />spacing, substrate preparation and substrate embedment where not specified. <br />2. Securely attach rough carpentry work to substrate with fasteners. Anchor to resist <br />a minimum force of 300 lbs/lineal foot in any direction. <br />3. Rough carpentry attachment shall meet the requirements herein and that of the <br />current FM Loss Prevention Data Sheet 1-49, Perimeter Flashing. <br />4. Install bolts flush with the top surface of nailers where possible to avoid <br />countersinking. Bolt bottom nailers then fasten upper nailers where possible. <br />Countersink bolts, nuts and screws flush with wood surfaces only as detailed. <br />5. Install fasteners without splitting wood. Pre -drill where necessary. Split or <br />damaged wood shall be removed, or repaired and/or re -secured to provide <br />acceptable conditions. <br />6. For anchors, pre -drill concrete and masonry units to prevent damage or cracking <br />of the masonry. Consult fastener manufacturer's published guides. Damaged <br />masonry shall be repaired, and fasteners shall be removed and re -installed in an <br />acceptable location. <br />7. Fastener spacing: Fasteners shall be staggered 1/3 the board width and installed <br />within 6" of each end. <br />a. Screws and 1/4 inch diameter anchors securing wood to concrete or <br />masonry units shall be spaced 12 inches on center maximum, staggered, <br />with fasteners installed at each end of nailer lengths to prevent wood from <br />twisting at board joints. <br />b. Screws securing wood to wood shall be installed 12 inches apart, <br />staggered, with two screws installed within 6 inches of each end of nailer <br />lengths to prevent wood from twisting at board joints. <br />C. Screws securing wood to steel decking shall be 12 inches apart. <br />d. Self -drilling, and/or pre -drilled self -tapping screws securing wood to <br />structural steel shall be spaced 12 inches apart, staggered, with one screw <br />within 6 inches of each end of nailer lengths to prevent wood from twisting <br />at board joints. <br />e. Nails securing wood to wood shall be spaced 12 inches apart, staggered, <br />with two nails installed within 6 inches of each end of nailer lengths to <br />prevent wood from twisting at board joints. <br />Plywood Deck Securement: <br />Nail plywood sheathing with 8d ring shank (0.131 inch X 2-1/2 inches) <br />nails or screws at 4 inches on center along the edges of plywood and 6 <br />inches on center along the intermediate roof framing. <br />H. Select fasteners of size and length that will not be exposed from the building interior and/or <br />from the ground, or remove protruding fasteners, paint or finish to eliminate exposure. <br />I.
