Child Abuse (Mentoring & Education Leadership Training in Child Abuse Prevention) <br />Priority Need Area Addressed: <br />"3. After school and summer recreational activities and academic enrichment programs." <br />ru <br />Brief Description of the Program: <br />The M.E.L.T. Child Abuse program will be Infused Into our Mentoring Academy Curriculum and combine our traditional core component of group mentoring with Child Abuse Prevention Education <br />activities. We are addressing the large gap in academic enrichment efforts and the need to develop positive out of school outlets for children age 12t. Services are designed to increase awareness and <br />enhance the civic engagement efforts of our youth. In addition to our mentoring academy programs, we will add three components, which address Child Abuse Prevention: <br />1. Youth Activities -Education: The Youth Guidance Junior Excel Club youth will participate in an 8 -week Child Abuse Prevention Education Mentoring series and ensuing monthly sessions. <br />2. Exchange Club Leadership: Participating Youth Guidance Junior Excel Club members will design and present an educational session, for youth, at the Florida Regional Exchange Club Conference <br />3. Civic Engagement (Youth and Mentors will): Facilitate one annual panel discussion at a PTA meeting and two parent group seminars; Participate in at least one Mission Field Dedication ceremony; <br />Distribute educational materials to parents and families during a Believe In the Blue event in April; Participation in a Blue Pinwheel Campaign <br />The Youth Guidance Excel Club has been recognized as the Outstanding District Excel Club for the past two years. This grant program will provide the additional resources needed to continue their level of <br />leadership and increased involvement in the battle to prevent child abuse. It would provide additional staff Input, increase mentor to student relationships, and allow students to participate in leadership <br />conferences. Our goal is to develop a cadre of civic volunteers from our core of youth, who will ultimately lead the Exchange movement of adults in Vero Beach, Indian River and the Nation. <br />1 <br />
