o!b/N4((ram /bonalfpra-d00)OW <br />RESOLUTION NO. 84- 75 <br />A RESOLUTION OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, <br />FLORIDA, SUPPORTING EFFORTS TO SECURE <br />COMPLIANCE WITH FLORIDA LAW WITH RESPECT <br />TO BEACH PRESERVATION. <br />WHEREAS, the Florida Legislature has recognized that the State's <br />beaches and dunes are one of its most valuable natural resources by <br />enactment of the "Beach and Shore Preservation Act", Chapter 161, <br />F.S.; and <br />WHEREAS, the Florida Legislature has recognized the need for <br />the protection of marine animals by enactment of the "Marine Turtle <br />Protection Act", Section 370.12, F.S.; and <br />WHEREAS, any actions public or private which contravene the <br />purpose and intent of said legislative enactments should be prohibited <br />and corrective action taken; and <br />WHEREAS, man-made inlets and related jetties interrupt the <br />southerly flow of sand; and <br />WHEREAS, at the northern boundary of Indian River County lies <br />the man-made Sebastian inlet with a 500 foot north jetty; and <br />WHEREAS, to the south of said inlet there has been severe <br />erosion which threatens property both public and private; and <br />WHEREAS, said erosion has had an adverse impact on the <br />hatching habitat of sea turtles; and <br />WHEREAS, the Downdrift Coalition, Inc., a non-profit <br />corporation, has as its goal protection of the beaches of Indian River <br />County from adverse impacts, <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF <br />COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />that: <br />1. The Board of County Commissioners is concerned about <br />erosion of its beaches and dunes. <br />2. The Board of County Commissioners supports efforts to <br />renourish and restore eroded beaches. <br />3. The Board of County Commissioners is appreciative and <br />supportive of efforts by the Downdrift Coalition to have legislative <br />enactments concerning beaches, dunes, and sea turtles complied with. <br />1 <br />
