PROCLAMATION <br />RECOGNIZING THE WEEK OF APRIL 22-28, 2019, AS <br />TOBACCO FREE FLORIDA WEEK <br />WHEREAS, the federal government declared youth e -cigarette use, or vaping, a nationwide <br />epidemic; and <br />WHEREAS, youth vaping has increased dramatically across the country and in Florida; and <br />WHEREAS, in 2018, one in four Florida high school students reported current electronic <br />vaping — a 58 percent increase compared to 2017, and 19.1 percent of Indian River County <br />youth ages 11-17 currently use e -cigarettes, which is higher than the state rate of 15.7 percent; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, e -cigarettes are unsafe for kids, teens, and young adults; and <br />WHEREAS, most e -cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm <br />adolescent brain development, and e -cigarettes can contain other harmful substances besides <br />nicotine; and <br />WHEREAS, the focus of Tobacco Free Florida Week 2019 is to get accurate information about <br />youth and e -cigarette use into the hands of our citizens, which is an important step to reversing <br />this alarming trend in our community; and <br />WHEREAS, Indian River County is committed to the goals and objectives of Tobacco Free <br />Florida Week through a variety of public health activities and programs. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that April 22-28, 2019, be recognized as Tobacco Free <br />Florida Week in Indian River County. <br />Adopted this 16th day of April, 2019.
