Academy
Priority Need Area Addressed:
Priority Need 3 - After School and Summer Recreational Activities and Academic Enrichment
Brief Description of the Program:
The Youth Guidance Mentoring Academy provides social skills and academic skills
development for students from low-income households and single parent families. Our.
services are delivered through three components: 1. Group mentoring — We operate 12-15
activity groups per week in eight-week semesters (six semesters each year) with
approximately 8-16 children per group. Our focus is on the development of social skills,
interpersonal relationships, academic achievement and community engagement. 2.
One -to -One Mentoring — Mentors provide guidance, interact with and take students to
activities, assist students with academics and help them to manage their personal behavior. 3.
Activities — We also provide educational activities such as field trips (Kennedy Space Center
tour, art museum, ballet, McKee Botanical Garden), and fun activities (sports events, concerts,
bowling, fishing, and sailing). All programs and activities have mentoring as its core
component.
