PROCLAMATION <br />DESIGNATING MARCH, 2020, AS <br />RED CROSS MONTH <br />WHEREAS, the American Red Cross was established as a humanitarian organization across the United <br />States and around the world. The local Coast to Heartland Chapter has a history of helping our neighbors by <br />providing services to those in need regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation or citizenship status, and <br />WHEREAS, the American Red Cross responds to an average of 62,000 disasters across the country every <br />year. In 2019 more than 250 Chapter volunteers assisted 39 people affected by 15 home fires in Indian River <br />County addressing their urgent needs of food, water and lodging, while providing recovery support; and <br />WHEREAS, the Red Cross continues to work with its partners to prevent fire tragedies through its national <br />Home Fire Campaign, installing 2 million free smoke alarms and saving more than 680 lives across the country <br />since its launch five years ago. Locally more than 585 free smoke alarms have been installed, making 360 <br />households safer from the threat of home fires; and <br />WHEREAS, the Red Cross provides disaster education and services to military members, veterans and <br />their families. We recognize the volunteers in Indian River County who make it possible to help our neighbors when <br />they need a helping hand; and <br />WHEREAS, every day, people in our community depend on the American Red Cross, whose lifesaving <br />mission is powered by the devotion of volunteers, generosity of donors and partnership of community <br />organizations; and <br />WHEREAS, we dedicate the month of March to all those who support its vital work to prevent and alleviate <br />human suffering in the face of emergencies. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, INDIAN <br />RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that the month of March, 2020, be designated as Red Cross Month in Indian River <br />County and the Board encourages all citizens to support this organization and its noble humanitarian mission. <br />Adopted this 10th day of March, 2020.
