PROCLAMATION <br />RECOGNIZING MAY 10 THROUGH 16, 2020 AS <br />NATIONAL POLICE WEEK <br />�A. <br />WHEREAS, there are more than 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities <br />across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Indian River County Sheriff's <br />Office and Indian River County municipal police departments; and <br />WHEREAS, in 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated <br />May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as <br />National Police Week; and <br />WHEREAS, on average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty <br />somewhere in the United States every 61 hours. Since the first known line -of -duty death in 1791, <br />more than 24,000 U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice; and <br />WHEREAS, over the past decade (2009-2019) the average annual number of officer <br />fatalities has been 158. In 2019, 146 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty; additionally <br />28 canines died in the line of duty; and <br />WHEREAS, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund honors and <br />remembers those recently fallen law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate price and <br />given their lives to protect and serve; and <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS, INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that May 10-16, 2020 is recognized <br />as National Police Week in honor of the service of law enforcement officers in our community <br />and communities across the nation and May 15 is recognized as Peace Officers Memorial Day, <br />in honor of all fallen officers and their families and U.S. flags should be flown at Half -Staff. <br />Adopted this 12th day of May, 2020. <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />Susan Adams, Chairman <br />Joseph E.
