EXHIBIT A
Children's Services Advisory Committee
2020-21 Grant Application
Agency Name: Youth Guidance Donation Fund of Indian River County, Inc.
Address: 1028 20th Place, Vero Beach, FL, 32960, US
Executive Director: Phil Barnes
Email:
pbarnes@youthguidanceprogram.org
Phone:
(772) 492-3933
Fax:
(772) 213-8598
Program Director:
Holly Forde
Email:
hforde@youthguidanceprogram.org
Phone:
(772) 492-3933
Program(s) Name:
The Mentoring Academy
Focus Area(s):
Quality After School and Summer Enrichment Programs
Program Description:
The Youth Guidance Mentoring Academy provides social skills, life skills, and academic
development for students from low-income households and single parent families. Our services
are delivered through three components:
1. Group Mentoring — These activities are designed to encourage interaction between mentors,
students, and volunteers. Students receive guidance and positive educational youth
development. Activities include: Computer graphics, robotics, bike repair, 3D printing, cooking
and other trade skills, music, art, science, financial and career readiness, photography,
leadership, communication, and sports. Before activities, we serve dinner to the children, often
their only nutritious meal of the day. We focus on developing social skills, interpersonal
relationships, academic achievement and community engagement among our children.
We operate 12-15 activity groups per week in eight-week semesters (six semesters each year)
with approximately 8-16 children per group. Each group is led by a staff person (titled Group
Leader) and is comprised of mentors (at a 1:4 ratio) and children.
2. One -to -One Mentoring — Students are assigned a mentor who agrees to a one-year
commitment to meet with that student a minimum of 2.5 hours per week. Mentors provide
guidance, interact with and take students to activities (including Youth Guidance group activities),
assist students with academics, and help them manage their personal behavior.
3. Activities — We provide educational activities such as field trips (Kennedy Space Center tour,
art museum, ballet, McKee Botanical Garden), and fun activities (sports events, concerts, bowling,
fishing, and sailing). All programs and activities have mentoring as its core component.
