Our programs provide opportunities for
physical activity, social and emotional growth and development, community engagement, and
personal responsibility in the classroom as well as on the baseball/softball diamond.
WSA/RBI offers recreational and academic programming year-round for children and youth in
Indian River County. Fun at Bat is the academic after-school and summer program and our RBI
League provides recreational team play for both baseball and softball play during the fall, spring,
and summer seasons. Fun at Bat is based in sports and designed to promote learning during
after-school hours that is connected to real life events and activities. Students engage in an eight-
week curriculum, Monday — Thursday, for a minimum of 1 hours throughout both fall and spring
terms of the academic school year. During the hour, students read, do math, or a STEM related
activity connected to the sport of baseball. Learning is split between indoor classroom instruction
and outside play. A 5 -week summer component is offered to extend beyond the academic school
year to support the reduction in summer learning lost for children in grades 1 st through 8th. Fun
at Bat literacy lessons focus and highlight positive character traits exhibited by famous
baseball/softball players while math lessons strengthen children math skills through calculating
the distance of a home run and real-world math skills. Science is brought to life through hands-
on play, children are able to make connections to how science influence game outcomes due to
physics, torque, force, momentum and other STEM related factors that children do not consider
associate while playing the sports of baseball and softball.
