EXHIBIT A
Children's Services Advisory Committee
2020-21 Grant Application
Agency Name: Substance Awareness Center of IRC Inc.
Address: 1507 20th Street, Vero Beach, FL, 32960, US
Executive Director: Carrie Maynard -Lester
Email:
cmaynard@sacirc.org
Phone:
(772) 770-4811
Fax:
(772) 770-4822
Program Director:
Carrie Lester
Email:
cmaynard@sacirc.org
Phone:
(772) 770-4811
Program(s) Name:
1 - Life Skills Training; 2 - ReDirect
Focus Area(s):
Middle and High School Programs that Address Risky Behavior
Program Description:
School-based programs are an essential part of a comprehensive approach to preventing substance use
and behavioral health risks. Botvin LifeSkills Training (LST) is a research -validated substance abuse
prevention program proven to reduce the risks of alcohol, tobacco, drug abuse, and violence by targeting
the major social and psychological factors that promote the initiation of substance use and other risky
behaviors. This comprehensive program provides adolescents with the confidence and skills necessary
to successfully handle challenging situations. LST is backed by over 30 scientific studies and is
recognized as an Exemplary program by an array of government agencies including the U.S. Department
of Education and the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. Five staff cover the full-time commitment
to provide our schools with the LST program in grades 5-8. Ericka's Lighthouse (ELH) is an evidence
informed, adolescent depression and suicide prevention program that raises awareness, reinforces skills,
encourages conversation, promotes early identification and prevention, and helps show adolescents that
they are never alone. ELH in combination with LST provides Indian River County youth with a researched
based comprehensive prevention plan. Both programs reinforce the skills and key concepts noted in
prevention science.
ReDirect is an "Indicated" prevention program for adolescents and their families. It is designed for youth
who demonstrate risky behaviors for substance misuse or other health risks. Re -Direct is a prevention
program that builds skills found to promote health and wellness and reduce high risk behaviors. Our
program promotes healthy alternatives to risky behaviors through activities designed to enhance skills,
increase knowledge, and improve cognitive and behavioral competencies. Each family that is referred to
the program receives individualized services determined by a prevention assessment tool. Depending on
need, services may last anywhere from two months to one year. Clients and their families engage in
group, individual, and family counseling sessions. Facilitated discussion, structured small group activities,
and behavior rehearsal are used to stimulate participation and promote the acquisition of skills. The
evidence -based curricula (both adolescent and parenting) use culturally sensitive, developmentally and
age-appropriate language and content. All sessions are face-to-face and approximately 60 minutes in
length at the SAC office or in the school. The parenting curriculum includes discussion topics on family
communication, parental monitoring, role modeling, appropriate discipline, effects and warning signs of
use, and taking a clear stand on use. The adolescent group curriculum includes lessons on identifying
strengths and goal setting; decision making and risk; managing anger, stress, and other emotions;
effective communication; and healthy relationships.
