� � r <br />contingency to both the City of Vero teach and the City of <br />Sebastian. <br />Commissioner Eggert suggested it be tied to the 65th <br />anniversary of Vero Beach. <br />Commissioner Adams thought that in a tight budget year the <br />money was better spent on some program to benefit children or <br />something else that would be more lasting. She felt that a <br />fireworks display was an event that should be funded by civic <br />groups or private donations. <br />Chairman Macht disagreed and favored use of tourist tax, which <br />would be appropriate in this instance since the fireworks draws <br />tourists. He deemed a fireworks display was a show of patriotism <br />and the end of World War II was no small matter. <br />Commissioner Bird agreed that the patriotism and comradery <br />generated by a 4th of July fireworks display was only a small part <br />of what government needs to do. He had never received any <br />complaints about tax dollars being spent for this use in the past. <br />Commissioner Tippin agreed that patriotism,µwas important, but <br />did not want tourist tax dollars spent for fireworks, and <br />Administrator Chandler reported they had investigated using tourist <br />tax dollars previously but were recommending MSTU contingency funds <br />this year. <br />MOTION WAS MADE by Commissioner Tippin, <br />SECONDED BY Commissioner Eggert, to approve <br />staff's recommendation. (provide $2,500 each <br />to City of Vero Beach and City of Sebastian <br />from MSTU contingency funds for 4th of July <br />fireworks displays. <br />Commissioner Adams asked if this would be put in the budget <br />for next year, and Commissioner Eggert wanted it tied to the 65th <br />anniversary of Vero Beach. <br />THE CHAIRMAN CALLED THE QUESTION and the <br />motion carried unanimously. <br />25 <br />May 16, 1995 <br />BOOK 95 F.�;E 5� <br />
