SECTION 01541 <br />PROTECTION OF THE WORK AND PROPERTY <br />1.5 PROTECTION OF EXISTING STRUCTURES <br />A. Underground Structures: <br />1. Underground structures are defined to include, but not be limited to, all sewer, <br />water, gas, and other piping, and manholes, chambers, electrical conduits, <br />tunnels and other existing subsurface work located within or adjacent to the <br />limits of the Work. <br />2. All underground structures known to ENGINEER except service connections <br />for water, sewer, electric, and telephone are shown. This information is shown <br />for the assistance of CONTRACTOR in accordance with the best information <br />available, buts s not guaranteed to be correct or complete. The existing utilities <br />shown on the Contract Drawings are located according to the information <br />available to the ENGINEER at the time the Drawings were prepared and have <br />not been independently verified by the OWNER orthe ENGINEER. Guarantee <br />is not made that all existing underground utilities are shown or that the <br />locations of those shown are accurate. The locations shown are for bidding <br />purposes only. Finding the actual location of any existing utilities is the <br />CONTRACTOR's responsibility and shall be done before it commences any <br />work in the vicinity. Furthermore, the CONTRACTOR shall be fully responsible <br />for any and all damages, which might be occasioned by the CONTRACTOR's <br />failure to exactly locate and preserve any and all underground utilities. The <br />OWNER or ENGINEER will assume no liability for any damages sustained or <br />costs incurred because of the CONTRACTOR's operations in the vicinity of <br />existing utilities or structures, nor for temporary bracing and shoring of same. <br />If it is necessary to shore, brace, or swing a utility, contact the utility company <br />or department affected and obtain their permission regarding the method to <br />use for such work. <br />3. Contact the various utility companies which may have buried or aerial utilities <br />within or near the construction area before commencing work. Provide 48 <br />hours minimum notice to all utility companies prior to beginning construction. <br />4. Schedule and execute all work involving existing utilities in order to minimize <br />necessary interruption of services. Whenever such interruption is necessary <br />for completion of the work, notify the ENGINEER and the appropriate utility at <br />least 48 hours in advance. Perform all work to repair/restore utility service to <br />the satisfaction of the appropriate utility. Include all costs related to service <br />maintenance, interruption, and restoration in the appropriate line item in the <br />Contract. <br />5. Where it is necessary to temporarily interrupt house or business services, the <br />CONTRACTOR shall notify the owner or occupant, both before the interruption <br />(24-hour minimum), and again immediately before service is resumed.
