in total citrus production, but second in grapefruit production. Part <br />of the citrus fruit is sold to the fresh fruit market, and there are <br />also 21 major packing houses and one citrus juice processing plant <br />located in the County. Approximately 62,208 acres of improved pasture <br />and rangelands are utilized for dairy farming and beef cattle <br />production, while approximately 44,100 acres remain as forest and <br />woodlands. <br />The largest manufacturer in the County is the Piper Aircraft <br />Corporation, which currently has approximately 1,450 employees involved <br />in the manufacture and sale of light aircraft and related services. <br />The Piper plant is located adjacent to the Vero Beach Airport. <br />Fellsmere Joint Venture has extensive citrus and cattle interests <br />in the County, employing approximately 600 persons at the peak of the <br />citrus season. Their agricultural properties, including a citrus <br />packing plant, are located west of Fellsmere in the central part of the <br />County. - <br />Other industries include lumber and millwork plants, cabinet and <br />millwork plants, machine shops, welding shops, sheet metal fabricators, <br />mattress ticking, mattress and springs, thermostats, aircraft <br />instruments, steel and wood truss construction, architectural and <br />ornamental iron works, stone and marble products, asphalt plant, pilot <br />training school, welding school, television antennas, wholesale <br />seafood, metal windows and awnings, printing, air handling systems, <br />ready mix concrete, concrete blocks, precast concrete products, <br />electronic components, plating and machine shop equipment, screw <br />machine parts, aircraft parts and supplies, factory built homes, dairy <br />products, newspaper, radio stations and temperature controls. <br />Twelve banks, eight savings and loan associations and nineteen <br />securities brokerage offices provide financial services within the <br />County. <br />The Atlantic beaches and the excellent climate in the County <br />provide the basis for a year-round tourist industry. There are <br />numerous hotels and motels in the County as well as retail and service <br />establishments geared to serving the tourist trade. <br />Forty-six miles of riverfront on the Indian River, many miles of <br />canals and lakefront and about 23 miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches as <br />well as two state parks, five county parks, and eight public and six <br />private golf courses provide ample opportunity for outdoor recreation. <br />The Los Angeles Dodgers baseball club trains at Dodgertown. The <br />340 -acre complex is also home to the largest and most advanced baseball <br />school in the world. <br />Employment <br />Indian River County employment fluctuates seasonally with most <br />unemployment occurring from July through October, the slower months in <br />both the tourist and citrus picking seasons. <br />24 <br />
