Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Palm Beach <br />THE SAMARITAN CENTER <br />Grant: $30,820 <br />Funds Used: $31,820 <br />Total Children Served: 38 unduplicated children served Cost per child: $734.36 <br />Focus Area: Building Parent Capacity <br />Taxonomy Number: Homeless Shelter BH -180.850; Child Abuse Prevention FN -1500.1900-150 <br />Program Description: This program is designed to offer a transitional housing and guidance to homeless families <br />with children who reside in Indian River County. Samaritan Center prepares the homeless families to live <br />independently. Adult clients attend trainings concerning the following: creating and maintaining a budget; <br />learning and using positive parenting skills; participating in employment and life skills training; required <br />counseling for mental health issues and well-being. Participants are required to obtain employment, save 75% <br />of their income and to follow a four -tiered level program prior to graduating from The Center. Children receive <br />academic tutorial support sessions on identifying positive, healthy behavior; gaining self-esteem and learning <br />character values; the negative effects of drugs and alcohol; the effects of divorce on children; and the <br />importance of health and hygiene. The children attend special outings within the community via Samaritan <br />Center and other community collaboration, such as attending local summer camps as well as camps during <br />winter and spring breaks for school aged children. <br />Collaboration: The Samaritan Center collaborates with the following community partners on a regular basis to <br />provide referrals and/or services to homeless families and their children, depending on each individual family's <br />needs. The Samaritan Center leadership also participates in several non-profit as well as professional business <br />collaboratives in an effort to network together to connect, advocate, renew, educate, and strategize for the <br />betterment of individuals and their families in our community at large. <br />The Homeless Children's Foundation; Mental Health Association; Mental Health Collaborative; Exchange Club <br />of I.R.C.; Substance Awareness Council; the Boys and Girls Club; Counseling and Recovery Center; New Horizons <br />of the Treasure Coast; Early Learning Coalition; Habitat for Humanity; United Against Poverty; Care Net <br />Pregnancy Center; A Caring Center for Women (Formally Women's Care Center); Gifford Youth Activities Center; <br />Healthy Start Coalition/Healthy Families; Little Birthday Angels; Exchange Club CASTLE; Center; CareerSource; <br />Suncoast Mental Health Association; Literary Services; Treasure Coast Homeless Services Council; Vocational <br />Rehabilitation; S.A.R.T; Indian River County Victim Advocate; Lifebuilders; Visiting Nurse Association; Safe <br />Families for Children, the Department of Children and Families. <br />*A new partnership for this quarter is the Rotary Club of Vero Beach where neighbors, friends and problem <br />solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change. <br />GOALS/OUTCOMES REPORT <br />Goal 1: Resident children who are age 4 and over will increase their self-esteem by showing an average of 5- <br />10% increase on most recent self-esteem pre & post-test given at the beginning and the end of the 8 -week <br />sessions. <br />Result: Post-test results indicate an average of 5.0% increase in resident children's self-esteem. Resident <br />children scored an average of 80% on pretests and 85% on posttest indicating positive decision m;lloieg based <br />
