Construction <br />activity saw a decrease with 7.3% less <br />building permits issued for new construction <br />in 2020 over 2019. The population of the <br />County has been steadily increasing, <br />growing to 158,834 in 2020. Historically, <br />Indian River County's economy was made <br />up of agriculture (citrus and cattle) and <br />tourism. Those industries have now been <br />complemented with an increase in health <br />care and information technology firms, light <br />manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade, <br />and service sector jobs. Due to the <br />negative impacts of the coronavirus <br />pandemic, unemployment saw an increase <br />from 3.7% in 2019 to 5.9% in 2020. The <br />citrus industry saw an increase in <br />production of 13.8% from 2.9 million boxes <br />in 2019 to 3.3 million in 2020.
