PROCLAMATION <br />RECOGNIZING MAY 9 THROUGH 15, 2021 AS <br />NATIONAL POLICE WEEK <br />WHEREAS, there are more than 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in <br />communities across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Indian <br />River County Sheriff's Office and Indian River County municipal police departments; and <br />WHEREAS, in 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which <br />designated May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which <br />that date falls as National Police Week; and <br />. WHEREAS, on average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty <br />somewhere in the United States every 54 hours. Since the first known line -of -duty death <br />in 1791, more than 24,000 U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate <br />sacrifice; and <br />WHEREAS, over the past decade (2010-2020) the average annual number of <br />officer fatalities has been 163. In 2020, 359 law enforcement officers died in the line of <br />duty; additionally 22 canines died in the line of duty; and <br />WHEREAS, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund honors and <br />remembers those recently fallen law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate <br />price and given their lives to protect and serve; and <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS, INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that May 9-15, 2021 is recognized <br />as National Police Week in honor of the service of law enforcement officers in our community <br />and communities across the nation and that May 15 is recognized as Peace Officers Memorial <br />Day, in honor of all fallen officers and their families and U.S. flags should be flown at Half - <br />Staff. <br />Adopted this 11th day of May, 2021. <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />Joseph E.
