PROCLAMATION <br />CELEBRATING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF <br />LITERACY SERVICES OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY <br />WHEREAS, Literacy Services of Indian River County was founded in 1971 by Marie Banks, Helen <br />Bradkins, Ann Hamner, Nat Jackson, Mary Lane MacMillan, Lolly Morgan, Cathy Moss, and Gertrude <br />Terry to serve local adults seeking English language and literacy skills. The organization is celebrating <br />its 50th Anniversary of service to Indian River County, and their mission is to deliver comprehensive <br />and innovative learning opportunities to local adults seeking English language and literacy skills to <br />achieve their goals; and <br />WHEREAS, Literacy Services' vision is that all adults are empowered with the literacy ski:ls <br />they need to thrive in our community. Their core values are empathy, inclusiveness, respect, <br />collaboration and commitment; and <br />WHEREAS, literacy is seen as a fundamental human right and the foundation for lifelong <br />learning and it is fully essential to social and human development in its ability to transform lives; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, Literacy Services offers one-to-one tutoring, small group instruction, workplace <br />literacy, conversation clubs and more so that local adults have the opportunity to learn English <br />language skills at their pace to achieve theirgoals. Hundreds of local adults have been positively <br />impacted by programs offered by Literacy Services. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that March 7, 2022 be proclaimed Literacy Services' 50th <br />Anniversary Day and call upon the people of Indian River County to observe this day by learnirg <br />about the importance of adult literacy and how to help empower others with vital English languace <br />and literacy skills. <br />Adopted this 8th day of February, 2022.
