6/22/2021 <br />Who's in charge here? <br />• AWA - Animal Welfare Act of 1966 <br />OUTDATED <br />The only Federal law in the United States that regulates the treatment of animals in <br />research, exhibition, transport, and by dealers. <br />• USDA - United States Department of Agriculture <br />LACK OF ENFORCEMENT OF AWA <br />The agency with the authority to enforce the law <br />• FWC - Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission <br />UNTRAINED IN ANIMAL HUSBANDRY <br />The agency with exclusive authority under the Florida Constitution to <br />protect and manage our state's wild animals. <br />Florida Administrative Code <br />FAC is the official compilation of administrative rules <br />for the state of Florida. <br />• Public contact or handling intervals for Class I wildlife shall be limited as to <br />frequency, intensity, and duration so that such handling will not adversely <br />affect the health, welfare, or safety of the animals, nor expose the public to <br />injury, per 68A -6.016(1)(c), FAC. <br />• No person shall maintain captive wildlife in any unsafe or unsanitary <br />condition, or in a manner which results in threats to the public safety, or <br />the maltreatment or neglect of such wildlife, per 68A6.009(1), FAC. <br />
