i <br />1/18/88.1(RESO)LEGAL(Vk) <br />RESOLUTION NO. 88- 7 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, TO THE GOVERNOR <br />OF THE STATE OF FLORIDA IN SUPPORT OF DESIGNATING <br />THE INDIAN RIVER LAGOON AS AN ESTUARY OF NATIONAL <br />SIGNIFICANCE. <br />WHEREAS, the Indian River Lagoon is the most diverse <br />estuary in North America; and <br />WHEREAS, the quality of life and economic welfare of <br />the residents of the region have long been associated with <br />the Indian River Lagoon system; and <br />WHEREAS, the Indian River Lagoon is an important part <br />of our nation's history as the first siting by the Spanish <br />explorers and the last footfall for man in space; and <br />WHEREAS, the Indian River Lagoon system provides a <br />growing economic base for commercial fishing, marine <br />services and facilities, tourism, and Indian River citrus; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, the Indian River Lagoon system supports <br />critical habitat for a variety of endangered species <br />including the largest manatee population in the state of <br />Florida and the United States; and <br />WHEREAS, the National Estuary Program ensures the <br />proper protection and management of vital estuarine <br />resources through the development and funding of programs, <br />research, and public education; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, <br />THROUGH ITS BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, that the County <br />supports a nomination by the Governor designating the Indian <br />River Lagoon as an Estuary of National Significance. <br />The foregoing resolution was offered by Commissioner <br />E ert who moved its adoption. The motion was <br />seconded by Commissioner Wheeler -------- and, upon being put <br />to a vote, the vote was as follows: <br />
