Broadband is another
term used for bandwidth — or the amount of data that can be sent through a connection —
to access high-speed internet. The more bandwidth, the more information a user can send
or receive at any given time.
The Federal Communications Commission currently defines broadband as download
speeds greater than 25 Megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of 3 Mbps.
The state of Florida defines broadband as a service that provides high-speed access to
the Internet at a rate of at least 25 Mbps in the downstream direction and at least 3 Mbps
in the upstream direction.
Why is broadband important?
Broadband allows people more affordable and efficient access to basic amenities such
as education, health care, public safety, and government services through:
• Providing people opportunities to participate in online learning and distance
education;
• Giving entrepreneurs and small home-based business owners opportunities to
compete with large corporations;
• Increasing the productivity and efficiency of businesses;
• Connecting patients in remote areas to health care services;
• Making government services more readily available to residents;
*N
