RESOLUTION NO. 81- 16 <br />WHEREAS, our children's health and well-being are everyone's <br />concern, yet few persons are aware that automobile injuries, <br />which are the primary cause of death and injury among children, <br />could easily be prevented through the use of child restraint <br />car seats and safety belts; and <br />WHEREAS, the injuries suffered by children riding as <br />passengers in motor vehicles are a major cause of epilepsy, <br />paraplegia, disfigurement and other permanent mental and <br />Physical disabilities; and <br />WHEREAS, studies in Florida communities indicate that only <br />10 percent of the State's children under five years of age <br />are properly rests; i <br />p D s restrained when riding in automobiles; and <br />WHEREAS, the proper use of federally approved, crash tested <br />child restraints could reduce injuries by almost 80 percent <br />and fatalities by 90 percent; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, That the Board <br />urges all parents, health professionals, community leaders, <br />and governmental and private sector agencies to do everything <br />possible to ensure that every child in our State be protected <br />from injury by child restraint car seats or seat belts when <br />being transported in motor vehicles; and <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that said Board urges all adults, <br />especially when riding with children, to be certain to use <br />their own seat belts, thereby protecting the children and <br />setting a positive example of safe behavior; and <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT THE BOARD OF COUNTY COM- <br />MISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, does hereby <br />declare <br />MARCH 23 - 29, 1981 <br />CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY WEEK <br />********** <br />Said Resolution to become effective as of the 11th <br />day of March , 1981. <br />BOO COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF <br />INRI ER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />By: f' l <br />rick B.
