RESOLUTION NO. 81- 18 <br />WHEREAS, GARY PARRIS became interested in sports and athletics <br />as a young boy; and <br />WHEREAS, GARY PARRIS first participated in competitive sports <br />in the City Recreation League when he moved to Vero Beach; and <br />WHEREAS, GARY PARRIS, upon entering high school, played varsity <br />basketball, varsity baseball and varsity track in the 9th grade. At <br />that time 9th graders were not permitted to play varsity football and, <br />in all probability, it was for that reason alone that he did not parti- <br />cipate in varsity football while in the 9th grade; and <br />WHEREAS, GARY PARRIS, participated in all four sports in the 10th, <br />11th and 12th grades, making All State basketball and All State baseball <br />in his junior year, and All State football in both his junior and senior <br />years in high school and named All State Sophomore of the year in 1966 <br />in football and Athlete of the Decade of the 1960's; and <br />WHEREAS, during his high school career,GARY PARRIS was recruited by <br />more than fifty major colleges for his football expertise; and <br />WHEREAS, from among the many choices given to him, GARY PARRIS <br />chose Florida State University for his college where he played <br />varsity football for the Florida State Seminoles for three years; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, while at Florida State University, GARY PARRIS received <br />honors and was voted All South in both his junior and senior years <br />and was named A. P. All American in his senior year at Florida State <br />University; and <br />WHEREAS, GARY PARRIS entered professional football when he was <br />drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 1973. He then went to the <br />Cleveland Browns where he played for four years and finally, GARY <br />PARRIS played with the St. Louis Cardinals during the last two years <br />of his professional football_ career; and <br />WHEREAS, GARY PARRIS displayed exemplary skill and sportsmanship <br />during his career as a professional football player.. He was awarded <br />the game ball on the Monday night T. V. game while with Cleveland <br />against the New England Patriots in 1977 and in the same year was <br />awarded the game ball in a game against the Miami Dolphins. In the <br />same year GARY PARRIS led the Cleveland Browns in touchdown re- <br />ceptions. In 1979, while playing with the St. Louis Cardinals, GARY <br />PARRIS was again awarded with the game balls in games against the <br />Houston Oilers and the New York Giants; and <br />WHEREAS, GARY PARRIS, during his athletic career, in high school, <br />college and --as a professional, has represented our community in <br />a most commendable manner; and <br />WHEREAS, Indian River County wishes to honor one of its outstanding <br />citizens for the recognition he has brought to the County by his numerous <br />accomplishments; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the Board on behalf of itself and <br />the citizens of Indian River County, expresses its appreciation to <br />GARY PARRIS for his many accomplishments in the world of athletics and <br />for the sportsmanlike example he has set for the young people of our <br />community; and <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board wishes GARY PARRIS continued <br />success in his future endeavors. <br />************** <br />Said Resolution shall become effective as of the 25th day of <br />March , 1981. <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />r, <br />By <br />P4trick B.
