jl - <br />P <br />RESOLUTION NO. 83-19 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, URGING THE <br />LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF FLORIDA TO ADOPT <br />LEGISLATION IMPOSING A LICENSE FEE FOR GILL <br />NET FISHING IN THE INDIAN RIVER, THE SEBASTIAN <br />RIVER AND INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY. <br />WHEREAS, the Indian River is a natural resource that <br />provides a livelihood for many fishermen and natural habitat for <br />sports fishermen, and <br />WHEREAS, a progressive resource management program for <br />the river is in the best interest of all the citizens of Indian <br />River County and all those who come .in contact with the river by <br />virtue of their occupation or hobbies, and <br />WHEREAS, both the sports fishermen and commercial <br />fishermen of Indian River County believe that the misuse of gill <br />nets in the rivers contribute to the disintegration of this <br />valuable resource and the disruption of the balance of nature, <br />and <br />WHEREAS, the imposition oe a reasonable gill net <br />licensing program can serve as an edrncational tool to stem the <br />misuse of such nets thereby preventing abuses, and <br />WHEREAS, funds derived from the licensing program could <br />be best utilized enhancing law enforcement efforts in the rivers, <br />further protecting this delicate resource. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, HE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that. <br />1. The Board of County Commissioners of Indian River <br />County, Florida supports the efforts of the commercial and sports <br />fishermen of Indian River County in preservation of the Indian <br />River, the Sebastian River and Intracoastal Waterway, and <br />2. The legislature of the State of Florida is urged to <br />adopt a reasonable gill. net licensing and education program for <br />commercial and sports fishermen in the Indian River, the Sebastian <br />River. and Intracoastal Waterway. <br />The foregoing resolution was offered by Commissioner <br />Lyons who moved its adoption. The motion was seconded by <br />Commissioner Scurlock and, upon being put to a vote, the <br />5C <br />
