%. , <br />RESOLUTION NO. 85- 25 <br />WHEREAS, the Barrier Island lying within Indian River <br />County is currently unnamed on all official U.S. Government maps, <br />!40 and; <br />WHEREAS, since before the turn of this century, the <br />Barrier Island within Indian River County has been known and <br />referred to by County residents and others concerned with the <br />history and tradition of Indian River County as "Orchid Island," <br />and; <br />WHEREAS, despite the historical designation of the <br />Barrier Island as "Orchid Island," the name "Orchid Island" was <br />never formally submitted to the U.S. Board of Geographic Names <br />for official approval and designation; and <br />WHEREAS, it has come to this Board's attention that <br />certain parties have suggested that the Barrier Island lying <br />within Indian River County be officially designated as "North <br />Hutchinson Island"; and <br />WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners and the <br />citizens of Indian River County wish to officially reserve the <br />historical designation of the Barrier Island within Indian River <br />County. <br />NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY FLORIDA that, on behalf of <br />the citizens of Indian River County, the Board wishes to recommend <br />and request that the United States Board of Geographic Names <br />officially designate the Barrier Island within Indian River County <br />as "Orchid Island" in order to preserve the history and tradition <br />that name implies. The foregoing resolution was offered by <br />Commissioner Scurlock who moved its adoption. <br />The motion was seconded by Commissioner Bird and, upon <br />being put to a vote, the vote was as follows: <br />Chairman ]Patrick B.
