• Organics and Sediments <br />• The accumulation of fine grained sediments, organic material and nutrients <br />entering the Lagoon through stormwater run-off has led to black, muddy <br />sediments with high water content, referred to as muck. <br />• Hydrology and Hydrodynamics <br />• The hydrology and hydrodynamics of the Indian River Lagoon have changed <br />over time as development has influenced the natural flow of the system. <br />Sea Level Rise <br />• The ecological implications for sea level rise will include impacts to seagrass <br />and the loss of marshes and mangrove habitat. <br />Ecosystem Functions and Habitat Use <br />• The IRL is home to more than 4,000 species of which 53 are listed as threatened <br />or endangered. <br />Marinas, Boats and Boat Ramps <br />• With over 10,000 boats registered in the County, boating best management <br />practices and boater education are important to protect the IRL ecosystem. <br />• Annual Rainfall <br />• Rainfall is a major contributor of freshwater runoff to the IRL with an average of <br />52 inches per year in IRC. <br />5/22/2023 <br />
