A""' <br />Proclamation <br />RECOGNIZING THE WEEK OF MAY 14-209 2023, AS <br />NATIONAL POLICE WEEK <br />Whereas, across the United States, more than 900,000 law enforcement officers serve in <br />communities, including the dedicated members of the Indian River County Sheriff's Office and Indian <br />River County municipal police departments; and <br />-Whereas, in 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers <br />Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls, as National Police Week; and <br />-Whereas, on average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the <br />United States every 54 hours, and, since the first known line -of -duty death in 1791, more than 25,000 <br />U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice; and <br />-Whereas, 245 law enforcement officers and 25 canine officers died in the line of duty in 2022, <br />and the average annual number of officer fatalities between 2012-2022 is 163; and <br />Whereas, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund honors, and remembers those <br />recently fallen law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate price and given their lives to protect <br />and serve. <br />Wow, 1 -herefore, be it Proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of <br />Indian River County, ,Florida, in honor of the service of law enforcement officers in our <br />community and communities across the nation, May 14 - 20, 2023 is recognized as National Police <br />Week, and May 15 is designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor of all fallen officers and <br />their families, and U.S. flags should be flown at Half -Staff. <br />Adopted this 16th day of May, 2023.
