Hawleya(7.bbbsbigs.org <br />Executive Director Phone: (772) 466-8535 <br />Name of Program: Community -Based Mentoring and Passport to Literacy <br />Focus Area: <br />Description of the Program: <br />Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Lucie, Indian River, and Okeechobee Counties provides a structured <br />mentoring program in these two areas: <br />Passport to Literacy will provide one-to-one mentoring focused on increasing emergent literacy skills <br />and social/emotional development of VPK children whose family member(s) are living in poverty. It will <br />also build parent capacity through parent training and family engagement activities. <br />Community -Based Mentoring program will provide one-to-one mentoring to identified "at -risk" children <br />and youth with a trained adult volunteer "Big" who mentors an average of 3 hours per week all year <br />with a "mentee/little". Mentors are matched with identified youth who are struggling academically and/or <br />socially in the community. They focus on academics, goal setting, life skills, and removing barriers from <br />future success. <br />Both programs provide quality one-on-one mentoring services to Indian River County children to <br />support and engage all to reach their full potential. <br />2 <br />
