W best possible (75% to 95%) consumption of brush fuels (shrub 1" to 3" <br />diameter - 100 hour timelag fuels); and <br />c.) best possible consumption of the heavy ftteiS (stems >3" diameter). <br />Note: Most of the heavy fuels will be "pile-burned" in small, scattered <br />piles to favor creation of open patches of mineral soils. <br />Table 8 directs the restoration burning of 3 MUs, 16, 17, and 18, at a fire intensity <br />described as "mosaic". This burn structure is also referred to as "patchy". For <br />purposes of this NCP Management Program, the objectives of a"mosaic" burn, which <br />under this plan will be applied to the higher quality scrub and mesic flatwood habitat <br />patches, are generLlly defined as: <br />a.) 100% consumption the lighter fuels (grasses, litter, twigs, and small <br />stems (< 1 " diameter) - 1 and 10 hour timelag fuels); <br />b.) 50% to 75% consumption of brush fuels (shrub 1" to 3" diameter- 100 <br />hour timelag fuels); and <br />C.) best possible consumption of the heavy fuels (stems > 3" diameter), <br />Note: Most of the heavy fuels will be "pile-burned" in small, scattered <br />piles to favor creation of open patches of mineral soils. <br />5.3.2.3 MINIMIZATION MEASURES <br />The following measures will be used in the field to reduce the potential for adverse <br />impacts to natural community structure resulting from implementation of the <br />recommended restoration treatments on the Scrub-Jay Habitat Compensation Areas. <br />1. Initiate habitat restoration treatments, mechanical and burning, within the Unit <br />17 conservation areas, Pelican Island Elementary School/Sebastian Highlands <br />Scrub Conservation Area, to minimize the extent of take resulting from the <br />proposed action, <br />2. Use of a logging contractor experienced in tree removal for purposes of habitat <br />restoration. <br />3. Use of existing jeep trails, historic fire breaks, and disturbed habitat areas as <br />primary ingress and egress routes for removal of the harvested pine logs from <br />each conservation site. Slash, twirls and small stems and branches (<3" <br />diameter), from logging operations will be primarily spread on-site to provide <br />fuel to carry the prescribed fire, The larger slash, large stems and branches <br />(>3" diameter), will be collected into randomly scattered small piles to <br />promote "blot spots" during the prescribed burn for purl:)0sr1s of exposing <br />patchy areas of mineral soil. <br />.w <br />90 <br />
