ILI <br />ARL,F;NF:: Tropical Storni with maximum sustained winds of60mph. Tropical Storm <br />Arlene developers approximately 500 miles southeast of Bermuda. The system moved <br />north for several days before fuming to the west-northwest. Arlene slowly moved west- <br />northwest because of a frontal boundary blocking any movement.. Eventually. the system <br />moved due north. A Tropical Storm Watch was issued for the island of Bermuda but, no <br />tropical storm force winds were recorded on the island. The storm dissipated as it was <br />absorbed by the frontal boundary approximately 600 miles northeast of Bermuda, This <br />tropical storm was never a threat to the United States and never made landfall in the <br />Western Ilernisphere. The duration of this tropical storm wits seven bays. lune; I 1 to <br />June 17. <br />CINDY: Catrgrity IV Hurricane with mnxtmum sustained :sinds of IAtrrnph. Cindy <br />was the season's first Cape Verde hurricane. Cindy developed from a low pressure area <br />ofl'the coast of Africa The system moved west-northwest for several days Upper level <br />winds did not allow Windy to intensify any further than Category I winds of 75mph- <br />After several days. Cindy began to move northwest lOr 36 hours and then north-northeast. <br />During this period. Cindy moved away from wind shcar and intensified as it moved north. <br />Cindy becairic a Category IV hurricane a few hundred miles southeast of Hermuda. The <br />system in(w id northeast and eventually became rrtra-tropical when it was adsorbed by a <br />cold front moving east in the North Atlantic. Ibis hurricane was never a threat to the <br />United States and never made landfall in the Westcm Hcatisphert. ihr duration of this <br />hurricane was fourteen clays. August Ili to August 31. <br />DENNIS: Category 11 Hurricane with maximum sustained winds of I05mph. Dennis <br />developed approximately 100 miles north of Puerto Rico. "is was almost the exact <br />location as the origin of Humcane Erin in 1915. Bennis became the first system to <br />threaten the Florida and the east coast of the Untied States. Dennis moved west- <br />northwest for 4H hours beforc making a gradual turn to the northwest. The National <br />Hurricane Center issued numerous watches and warnings for the Bahamas and the US <br />east coast including Florida. As Dennis moved passed Jacksonville. 150 miles offshore. <br />the; system began proving northeast. It appeared that Dennis would not make landfall <br />anywhere in the United States. However. just offshore of North Carolina, Ilcisnis stalled <br />quid icenained in the carne location for 2 days. North Carolina received almost 12 inches <br />of rain during the time Dennis remained offshore. Hurricane force gusts were reported on <br />the outer banks but, no sustained hurricane winds were experienced. finally, as a tropical <br />storm, Dennis made landfall in North Carolina with winds of 70mph. Again, mote rain <br />was experienced by North Carolina and slates to the north. With Dennis. wind was not a <br />focal point of damagc. The iaiin caused widespread flooding and was responsible for <br />most of the damage experienced. Statistical inforinaiion on Dennis is as follows. <br />
